High Resolution Access

Through the Shared University Research Program, the Digital Services and Development Unit recently received a grant from IBM of two T221 9.2 Mpix 204 PPI monitors and workstations to provide high-resolution access to the emblem images. One monitor is placed in the Rare Book and Special Collections Library for use by researchers and German literature students. The second monitor and workstation is used in DSD's lab during the production stage for digital images. The monitor allows us to do soft-proofing work to check image quality and color quality of the generated images. DSD follows Digital Library Federation standards for benchmarking digital reproductions of printed monographs and serials and uses the monitors to qualitatively judge the benefit of providing access to high-resolution images.

The Rare Book and Special Collections Library will be able to reduce wear and tear to the original fragile emblem books by providing high-quality digital surrogates in a searchable database. More scholars and students will have access to these important materials and will be able to see them as they actually appear in analog form.

We acknowledge this generous grant from IBM of the two T221 monitors.
