Course Descriptions

Track A: On-site Digital Imaging Workshops

Two-day workshop on digitization held at the Illinois State Library in Springfield, IL. This workshop will include a mixture of classroom training and hands-on work covering the basics of digitization, including project planning, equipment selection, what digital images are, metadata, and more. The hands-on activities will ensure that participants are familiar with digitization concepts such as bit depth, resolution, and metadata creation. We will also do hands-on image capture using scanners and digital cameras, learn more about how to use optical character recognition software, and create metadata using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management system. Participants are encouraged to bring a few of the items from their own collections to use.

Track B: Online/On-Site Digital Imaging Workshops

Three-week online course. This track will offer an online digitization training course for cultural heritage institution professionals who are looking for more in-depth digitization instruction. Track B's asynchronous course will allow participants to contribute to online discussions, interact with the course instructor and other participants, and solve real world digitization problems. Topics to be discussed are:

The course is asynchronous, yet still instructor-led. Participants should be prepared to spend 2-3 hours a day on course readings, although some extra readings and assignment may take more time. Track A is not a prerequisite for Track B.

How it works: Each participant receives a unique login identification and password. These will allow participants to access the course web site. Each day (Monday-Friday) a new reading is released to the web site. Participants can access the web site anytime, day or night and on weekends, to do the daily reading and any associated assignment. Assignments are usually a brief “think piece” or a short quiz.

Track B optional two-day hands-on workshop: Some online courses will also include a supplemental two-day hands-on workshop, to be given after the completion of the online potion of the course. This workshop is completely optional. Workshops will be given at the Illinois State Library in Springfield, Illinois. Workshop participants will spend two days doing hands-on image creation using scanners and digital cameras, creating metadata for images, and uploading that metadata into an image management system (CONTENTdm). The goal of the workshop is to create a “mini-collection” from start to finish by taking a few items and going through the complete evaluation, digitization, and metadata creation process. Participants are encouraged to bring items from their own collections to use.
