Aztec, Inca and Maya

Database Integration: Using images found on the TDC database, students will analyze Aztec weaponry and its value to Aztec culture. They will also describe the impact Spanish technological advances in weaponry would have upon this society.

16.A.3b: Make inferences about historical events and eras using historical maps and other historical sources. Students create a Word document analyzing and describing the impact of technology upon Aztec weaponry and society using resources from the TDC database.


Materials:

TDC database, Internet, "Across the Centuries" text, other available texts and books


Procedures:

  1. Students search the TDC database and other sources for images of Aztec weapons, structures, vessels, and other items demonstrating Aztec military practices.
  2. Students describe images including design, construction, materials, and methods.
  3. Based upon description, students analyze and infer what types of weapons and fighting techniques Aztecs typically faced during battle.
  4. Students analyze and infer the psychological impact of Aztec human sacrifices upon societies with which they go to war.
  5. Students describe the weaponry and fighting tactics of the invading Spaniards.
  6. Students describe and infer the impact of the Spanish technology upon Aztec weaponry and methods as well as Aztec society.

Assessment:

Teacher will devise a rubric for grading document and distribute and discuss rubric prior to the assignment.
