Illustrated Timeline of Illinois Settlement

STATE GOAL 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations.

STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States.

Each student will collect photos on the settlement of Illinois. The student will design and create a timeline that illustrates the important events of Illinois until 1870. The timeline may take any form and it must accurately summarize at least fifteen events from early exploration until 1870. The timeline should have the accurate date, a picture representing the event, and a short summary describing the event. A summary statement that states which of the events you feel was most important in the settlement of Illinois.


Materials:

Computer lab, printer, writing utensils


Procedures:

  1. Students will search the TDC database for information on the settlement of Illinois.
  2. Students will collect at least fifteen pictures.
  3. The pictures will be placed in a timeline as to student design in an order to tell the settlement history of Illinois.

Assessment:

A teacher created rubric that is presented and discussed at the start of the unit will assess each student on the entire project.
