Database Integration: Each student wil be given a pre-determined amount of time to search the TDC database for photographs to use in a newspaper written during the Progressive Era.

STATE GOAL 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations. Each student will collect photographs on the Progressive Era in Illinois then write three newspaper articles. The student will use one photo per article. The article will highlight an event in Illinois during the Progressive Era. The newspaper must also include an editorial. The students must create a proper banner for their paper as well as headlines. They will headline a feature story that describes a specific segment of the Progressive Era. They will include at least five other sections: weather map, advertisement, food section, editorial, fashion, city life, entertainment.


Materials:

Computer lab, printer


Procedures:

  1. Students will search the TDC database for information on the Progressive Era in Illinois.
  2. The photos will then be placed in a text article and captioned by the student.
  3. Using the writing process the students will create a finished product.

Assessment:

A teacher created rubric that is presented and discussed at the start of the unit will assess each student on the entire project.
