Bedkey
TitleBedkey
Coverage / Year1773 to 1830
DescriptionBedkey. Consists of a long Y-shaped shank with a round cross bar pegged in near the top. 12.25" long.
InterpretationHas anyone ever told you to "sleep tight"? In the early 19th century many bedframes had ropes to hold up the mattress. It was hard to sleep well on a saggy mattress so people had to periodically tighten the ropes in order to sleep well. This bedkey was used to turn the ropes and keep them tight.
